With spring in the air and summer just around the corner, it’s almost that time to get your pool prepped and ready for those hot summer days – and that includes pool maintenance. The most effective way to easily maintain your pool is to simply create a routine. So here are a few important steps to help ensure your pool stays spotless.

Vacuum and Brush the Pool

Every week, schedule a day where you can carve out some time to vacuum and brush the pool. Get a good, wide-end scrubbing brush and scrub as much of the pool lining as possible. Focus on areas that look like they may have some build up in order to eliminate any residue or algae. After you’ve scrubbed the pool, then give it a vacuum. This will help improve the clarity of the water and reduce the need for chemicals.

Sift Out Debris

Use a strainer basket to skim along the water to collect any debris. This will allow you to remove anything that might clog up the filter and hinder the circulation of the system. It’s also a smart idea to keep an eye on the condition of your basket strainer. If you notice any rips or tears, if could be time for a replacement.

Clean Your Filter

If your pool is the local hot spot during the summer months, then it’s imperative to keep your filter clean. Whether it’s a cartridge, sand, or diatomaceous earth filter, your filter needs regular maintenance. But keep in mind not to over-clean it – sometimes a spotless filter can allow in more particles. So once the difference between your pressure gauge and flow meter reads 10 to 15 psi, it’s time to clean it.

Check Your Water Levels

In order to protect your pump, you need to ensure that the water levels aren’t too low. So once a week, take a look at the water. Between the heat and constant activity within your pool, it’s pretty common for your pool to fluctuate. If you notice the levels are dipping beneath your basket skimmer, simply use your garden hose to top it back up and then rebalance the water.

The luxury of owning a pool requires maintenance and constant upkeep. But that doesn’t mean it needs to hinder your time or cause any headaches. By simply scheduling in a routine that encompasses each of these steps, you can upkeep it effortlessly so that you and your family can enjoy those hot summer days in a safe, clean pool. Remember, hiring a pool maintenance service is always an option if you prefer less cleaning, more cannonballing.
